浜辺美波の“恍惚顔”はいかにして生まれたか？
浜辺美波が恍惚とした表情を浮かべ、高杉真宙が挙動不審で慌てふためく…。人気漫画を実写ドラマ化した「賭ケグルイ」(放送中)で、個性たっぷりのキャラクターに扮する若手キャスト陣の熱演が話題だ。クランクイン前に英勉監督は「マックスやってもらいます！」と宣言したそう。各キャスト陣が新境地を切り開いた、“振り切りすぎのキャラクター”はどのように生まれたのか？英監督に聞いた。本作は、ギャンブルによる階級制度に支配された私立百花王学園を舞台に、危険な賭けを続ける学生たちの姿を描く物語。常軌を逸したギャンブルに身を投じる彼らの“賭け狂っていく”表情が大きな見どころだ。
英監督は「原作の世界観が出来上がっているので実写化は難しいと思いましたが、実写ゆえのおもしろみを探り当てていくなかで、人に特化した、キャラクターショーみたいなことをできればいいと考えました」とコメント。「各話ごとにいろいろな人が出てきて、思いっきり賭け狂う。キャストたちがキャラクターをしっかりとつかんでいれば、視聴者がその振り切りぶりを楽しめるドラマになると思いました」と実写化する上では、キャスト陣の“狂い方”が欠かせなかったという。
浜辺が、清楚な美少女ながら、ギャンブルでリスクを負うごとに快感を覚えるという二面性を持つ主人公・蛇喰夢子を演じている。顔合わせで、浜辺と対面した英監督は「ここに来たということは、あなた、やるんですよね!?マックスでやってもらいますよ！」と覚悟を確認したそう。
浜辺は「はい」と素直に答えていたそうだが、その覚悟が手に取るようにわかったのが、クランクイン前に浜辺、高杉、森川葵、矢本悠馬を集めて行った“本読み”のときだという。「とりあえず、“マックスでやってみよう”という話をして本読みを始めて、それがものすごくおもしろかった。あなたがそうやるなら、私はこうやるよとみんながガスガスと芝居を出してくる。手の内をさらすセッションのようでしたね。この人たち、おもしろいなあと思いました」と、若手キャスト陣が競うようにテンションやボルテージを高め合っていくのを肌で感じたという。
「たぎってしまいますわー！」と台詞を放ち恍惚とした表情を浮かべる様は、浜辺の清純派のイメージを見事に覆す名シーン。「僕が“マックスやってもらう”とお願いしたことに対する、浜辺さんの答え。ものすごく素敵な表情が出てきたので、うれしかったですね」と英監督。「浜辺さんは、切り替えがとても速いんです。夢子もギャップのある女の子ですが、浜辺さんも普段はくったくのない17歳。でも芝居モードに入ると、ポン！と変化する。そのスイッチの切り替え、ギャップは見ていてとてもおもしろいです」と浜辺の女優力を大絶賛だ。
また高杉が勝負に弱い鈴井涼太役として、ヘタレキャラを演じているのも新鮮だ。英監督は「異空間にいる人たちの様子を視聴者に伝えてくれるのが鈴井の役目なんですが、彼はパニック状態になっている(笑)。高杉くん自身がものすごく気持ちのいいヤツなんで、そういう人が必死にしゃべっている姿ってそれだけでおもしろいんですよね。なんともいえない人のよさがにじみ出たキャラクターになっている」と思わず笑顔。「高杉くんは現場でみんなに愛されているんですよ。自分の出番前から、“ちょっと見ておきたいんで”と現場の隅っこにじーっと座っているような子です」。
英監督からの演出として、浜辺は「夢子っぽくしゃべって」、高杉は「まだストックあるでしょ？」との言葉が印象深かったそうだが、どちらも役者を信頼しているからこそ出る言葉だ。英監督といえば、これまでにも『ヒロイン失格』(15)や『トリガール！』(17)など、若手俳優の新たな表情を引き出す手腕に定評があるが、「みなさんすでに輝いている人たちなので、その輝きを消さないように、邪魔をしないようにしようとしているだけ」と演出のポイントを語る。
「今回だって、自分で壁を飛び越えるだけのジャンプ力がある人たちばかり。僕は“飛んでいいよ”“もっと飛んじゃいなよ”という場所を用意するだけなんです。すると、“ずっと飛びたいと思ってたんです”と自分たちで気づいていく。学校でも、もっとバスケの練習したいと思っていると、体育館の鍵をあけてくれるような管理人のおじさんがいましたよね。それです！『賭ケグルイ』というドラマは自分のマックスをぶつけて、“なんだ、もっと飛べるじゃん！”と彼ら自身が気づくのにぴったりな作品だと思います」。
